Turbulent builds hydro-powered electricity grid in Kenya

🤯 500 households, 10 schools, 10 companies and 3 hospitals connected to sustainable electricity AND 840.000 tonnes of CO2 saved per year.
Yup, that’s the amazing result of the new hydro-powered electricity grid in Kiamahindu, Kenya. Together with local partners, the Belgian company Turbulent has built a hydropower plant, generating 210 kW day and night. The turbines are small enough so they don’t harm the rivers’ ecosystems, yet make a massive difference for local people, businesses and public services.
Like many rural communities in Africa, Kiamahindu used to rely fully on fossil fuels to generate electricity for everyday applications. Thanks to the new hydropower plant, they can now shift to clean energy and eliminate the use and negative consequences of electricity generated by fossil fuels. The mini-grid will provide a.o. lighting for businesses, cooling for agriculture, battery charging and e-bike leasing, energy for health services and an IT-connectivity service.
🙌 This fantastic project was funded by the Climate Action Programme of our partner G-STIC (the Global Sustainable Technology and Innovation Community).

News we love
🌍 On this year’s Earth Day - April 22 - we had a cause for celebration! Thanks to people all over the world demanding sustainable action from decision-makers, we’ve made some big wins for the planet since the last Earth Day.
🤖 AI offers incredible opportunities to build climate resilience and adaption. Google is already introducing AI-generated extreme heat alerts to help people and cities stay safe during heat waves. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg!
☀️ Building solar parks on trash mountains and man-made lakes? No problem for the Netherlands! Our Dutch friends show that you don’t need a lot of space to create clean energy; just innovative solutions and progressive policy-makers.
🍀?Do you sometimes feel anxious, sad or angry about climate change? You’re not alone! But withdrawing from nature isn’t the answer. Instead, helping the environment can make us feel so much better, both mentally and physically.
🤿 Coral reefs are crucial to maintaining the ocean’s health, as well as providing half of the earth’s oxygen and absorbing CO2. That’s why scientists, NGOs and local communities in Southeast Asia are joining forces to protect these precious reefs from harmful human activities.
Tip for a sustainble tomorrow
All right, avoiding clothes altogether probably isn’t the most practical tip! 😉 Luckily, there are many ways in which can rock a show-stopping outfit and feel 100% good about it! From shopping recycled or second-hand clothing and choosing eco-friendly fibres to giving your clothes some tender loving care so they last longer.

Today’s must watch
Jack Harries argues new trees won’t solve global warming 🤔
People, companies and governments across the globe are planting trees to offset carbon emissions. And that’s absolutely awesome! Or is it? According to climate storyteller and documentary filmmaker Jack Harries planting trees might not be as beneficial as we think. Find out why!
We’d argue not all tree-planting programmes are equal, though! The Belgian initiative Go Forest, for example, guarantees full transparency on its reforestation projects. Sounds interesting? It sure is! That’s why we were very excited to welcome co-founder Sarah Parent on the stage of the Love Tomorrow Campus last week. 👌
