Let’s create more coffee and less CO2

Nothing beats a fresh cup of coffee to kickstart your day. ☕
The worldwide demand for coffee keeps growing, but small coffee farmers in countries like Peru and Ecuador are struggling. Climate change effects are threatening their harvests, forcing them to take desperate measures that lead to more environmental damage. Meanwhile, coffee lovers increasingly prefer an eco-friendly cuppa, leaving farmers with a real coffee conundrum.
Thanks to project COCO2, that’s about to change.
This project - launched in Cajamarca (Peru) in 2022 - unites farmers, academics and government representatives to brew up solutions for high yields of carbon-neutral coffee. COCO2 is coordinated by the international NGO Rikolto and funded by the Flemish government in the framework of the G-STIC Climate Action Programme.
On April 28th, 2023, the Flemish Government decided to launch a third project call for international climate financing (€17.6 million) through the G-STIC Climate Action Programme. Applicants can register until June 30th, 2023.
News we love
🌍 According to scientific researcher Hannah Ritchie doom and gloom thinking won’t solve the climate crisis. But neither will complacent optimism. We need the right kind of optimists who believe we can save the planet if we fight for it.
📱 Honouring May’s Mental Health Awareness Month, Tiktok launched a new advertising fund to boost mental health outreach. The fund will provide $2 million in-app advertising credits to 7 mental health organisations.
✈️ Rolls-Royce has successfully conducted initial trials of its revolutionary UltraFan aircraft engine, employing 100% sustainable aviation fuel, mainly derived from waste-based feedstock. UltraFan, designed to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions, is a game changer that could aid the aviation industry in its shift towards carbon neutrality.
🐟 Fish populations worldwide are dwindling, but the demand for fish keeps growing. That’s why biotech company Steakholder Foods and cellular agriculture start-up Umami Meats are developing the first 3D-printed lab-grown fish products as a sustainable alternative.
🏝️ Marker Wadden is a 1300-hectare Dutch archipelago, built by ecological engineers, landscape architects and a dredging company over the last decade. The ambitious project was initiated to revive a dead lake and provide a safe space for wildlife and nature to flourish.
Tip for a sustainable tomorrow
Can’t wait for your next holiday break? Nor can we, but we think the planet deserves a break too! Yet, if we have to analyse every move - from transport, accommodation, activities to eating out - we might get nowhere. Literally.
Luckily, CN Traveler’s sustainable travelling guide saved the (holi)day!
Their guide is jam-packed with actionable tips to enjoy a more eco-friendly escapade. Whether you like sipping cocktails on a sun-soaked beach or strolling around a new city: with just a few small changes, you can already make a massive impact. Cheers to saving the planet on flip-flops!🍹
Today’s must watch
Houston, we have a space waste problem 🚀
“Our long-term goal is to see a circular economy in orbit.” Those are the promising words of Chris Blackerby, COO of Astroscale. Astroscale is one of the many companies developing advanced technology to clean up space waste.
Wait what, do we also have a waste problem in space? 🤯
Sadly enough, we do. Thousands of satellites in space facilitate our modern comforts like Google Maps, the internet and bank transactions. We’ve been launching spacecraft since the 1950s, with no plan for cleaning anything up. As a result, the lower Earth orbit is becoming ever more cluttered with dead and broken satellites, old rocket parts and other man-made space junk.
But that’s not even the biggest problem. This space debris is flying around the earth at more than 20.000 km per hour. If it collides with spacecraft or other flying objects, it can explode, resulting in thousands of tiny pieces. These are much harder to remove and could lead to some parts of the Earth’s orbit being unusable for future generations.
The good news is that a lot of bright minds around the globe are working on different ways to solve this problem. Check out this inspiring video to learn how tech companies are making our space race more sustainable.
