News we love
🌍 Amsterdam has set the ambitious goal of becoming the world's first circular city by 2050. This involves viewing waste as a valuable resource rather than an endpoint. By transitioning to closed-loop systems that consistently repurpose, recycle, and reuse materials, Amsterdam aims to halve its use of new raw materials by 2030 and cut emissions. The city has embarked on more than 70 experimental projects across sectors like construction, food, and consumer goods, highlighting the city's commitment to a complex but crucial journey toward a circular economy for a sustainable future.
🌳 Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon plunged this July. Satellite data show an astonishing 66% reduction in deforested land compared to the same month last year. The decrease is attributed to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's efforts to reinstate environmental safeguards and gather international support for the rainforest. This marks a positive shift from the previous administration's policies that increased deforestation.
🤖 By 2050, the world will have to feed 10 billion people. Yet, we’re already experiencing the harmful effects of our current farming methods on the earth and the climate today. That’s why various companies are harnessing AI to create more sustainable food systems. These include monitoring crop health to reduce pesticide use, tackling food insecurity by ensuring efficient distribution and early detection of illnesses in livestock to minimize the use of antibiotics.
👕 According to the European Commission, textile consumption had the 4th largest environmental and climate impact, after food, housing and mobility. The production of fast fashion has skyrocketed globally, along with its environmental pollution, waste streams, GHG emissions and use of natural resources. At the same time, sustainable fashion initiatives are making huge strides as well. From sustainability passports on clothing and trendy circular brands to the popular pre-loved fashion app Vinted: let’s dress to impress with a lower impact on the planet.
⛵ Countries at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) summit have agreed to achieve net-zero shipping emissions “by or around 2050”. Promising solutions to reach this goal include wind-powered ships, cleaner fuels like hydrogen and methanol, electric boats with renewable batteries and the development of green infrastructure at ports.

10 tips for eating more sustainably this summer
Summer is the season of abundance. From juicy, sun-riped berries to colourful peppers, squashes, tomatoes, beans, carrots, … there are so many delicious options to choose from. This also means that summer is thé perfect time to choose our food more sustainably. What we eat truly matters!
According to Professor Johan Röckstro, co-chair of the EAT-Lancet Commission, humanity has turned 50% of all natural ecosystems on land into different forms of agriculture. The good news is that over 100 countries have pledged to return 1 billion hectares of agricultural land to nature, and big food production companies are increasingly committing to regenerative farming and sustainable sourcing.
However, we as consumers also have a major role to play, as our dietary choices encourage the food industry to shift towards more planet-friendly practices. Moreover, studies have shown that sustainable eating is healthier for us. So let’s get started with these 10 bite-size tips for eating more sustainably.
